Who are we?

  • Our mission is to provide civil emergency communication services when requested by our customers the cities of Albany and Berkeley, CA; The University of California, Berkeley; and Alta Bates Hospital.
  • All licensed amateur radio operators are invited to join us. NALCO is the Northern Alameda County (NALCO) Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). Its stakeholders include the cities of Berkeley and Albany California. NALCO also serves the University of California at Berkeley and the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. The NALCO mission is to provide civil emergency communication services when requested by its stakeholders. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. NALCO is an affiliate of the American Radio Relay League. We were started in 1982.

What do we do?

  • Provide emergency communication services at the request of our stakeholders.
  • Hold monthly meetings where group business is reviewed and where a training or informational presentation is made.
  • Hold four Fire Patrols during the year. These are training exercises.
  • Operate a weekly net on 440.9 MHz.
  • Participate in community events. For example: we have operated a booth at the Solano Stroll for several years.

How do we operate?

  • We are a non-profit that is guided by four board members: President, Vice-president, Secretary and Treasurer. Board members are elected by the group annually.
  • Additionally there is an Emergency coordinator, an Assistant emergency coordinator and a Net Manager.

What is expected of members?

  • Participate in the weekly nets by checking in and occasionally serving as net control. We will teach you how to be net control if you need it – anyone can do it.
  • Attend monthly meetings.
  • Participate in the fire drills. Expectation is to be there for two out of the four scheduled drills.
  • Serve as a board member. 

How can you participate?

  • Participate in a weekly net at 440.9 MHz, 19:15 hours each Thursday of the month. You do not need to be member to check into the net.
  • Attend a monthly meeting. They are held the 1st Thursday of each month at 19:30, typically at the Berkeley Alternate EOC which is located at 997 Cedar St. in Berkeley. You do not need to be a member to attend and visitors are encouraged.
  • Join! This is easy. You must have a current FCC radio amateur license. Create a registration on this site and pay the annual due of $25.00. The due can be paid by check or PayPal
